Applications

Combustion by-products (CBPs), including various types of ash, slag, and flue gas desulfurization products, can serve as valuable anthropogenic resources if their properties are stable and confirmed by testing. In practice, this means that they can be used to replace some of the primary raw materials or as components of new materials and technologies.

The range of applications for UPS is wide, as their mineral composition and chemical reactivity allow them to be used in both material and environmental processes.

The development of a specific direction is determined by, among other things, the type of UPS (classic, fluidized, SDA, biomass), grain size, reactive phase content, washability, and EU standards and regulations.

CIMA focuses on applications that combine environmental safety, repeatable quality, and real economic benefits, supporting the transition from a “waste” model to an “anthropogenic resource” model.

Areas of application

UPS are used in Europe and worldwide in several main areas:

  • Construction and binding materials
  • Civil engineering and geotechnics
  • Mining and underground works
  • Environmental applications
  • Specialized and innovative directions ...

In each of these applications, it is essential to match the properties of UPS to the requirements of the technology and to confirm their safety and quality.

Paths of use

  • UPS in cement and binders

For whom: cement plants, binder producers, material laboratories.

Potential UPS: fly ash, selected fluidized ash, desulfurization products.

Key parameters: chemical composition, loss on ignition, reactivity, sulfates, chlorides, repeatability.

When to contact CIMA: when the material has bonding potential but requires qualification.

  • UPS in concrete

For whom: concrete plants, designers, laboratories, contractors.

Potential UPS: mainly fly ash meeting the requirements for mineral additives.

Key parameters: compliance with the standard, fineness, pozzolanic activity, impact on workability and durability.

When to contact CIMA: when you need to assess the suitability of a particular batch or source.

  • UPS in road construction and geotechnics

For whom: road managers, designers, contractors, geotechnical laboratories.

Potential UPS: bottom ashes, slags, fluidized bed ashes, secondary aggregates.

Key parameters: load-bearing capacity, compactibility, washability, volumetric stability.

When to contact CIMA: when UPS are to replace aggregates, soils or binders.

  • UPS in mining and underground works

For whom: mines, liquidation plants, engineering companies.

Potential UPS: ash-water mixtures, binders, selected mineral waste after qualification.

Key parameters: pumpability, binding, stability, environmental impact.

When to contact CIMA: when you need backfilling, sealing or filling material.

  • Biomass UPS and environmental applications

For whom: biomass energy, agriculture, recultivation, material producers.

Potential UPS: biomass ashes, selected fractions after testing.

Key parameters: alkalis, trace metals, fertilizer composition, leachability, seasonal variability.

When to contact CIMA: when the material has fertilization, remediation or raw material potential but requires a safety assessment.
