About Us
Centre for Anthropogenic Minerals Engineering (CIMA) was established at the Institute for Applied Research of Warsaw University of Technology on 1st December, 2013.
CIMA carries out research and development activities connected with engineering of man-made mineral substances, aiming at creating a model of modern, sustainable, low-emission economy for Poland catering for innovation and sustainable development.
To this purpose CIMA strives for integrating experience and scientific potential of Warsaw University of Technology with other national centres active in the area of protection of mineral resources and processing of anthropogenic mineral, as well is collaborating with select international bodies.
The work of CIMA is directed by PhD Eng Tomasz Szczygielski, expert in processing and utilisation of coal combustion products in power generation based on this fuel. Founder of the Polish Union of Coal Combustion Products and its President in the years 1993-2013. In the years 2002-6 Vice-President of the European association ECOBA with similar mandate. Member of Technical Committee for concrete at the Polish Committee for Standardisation. Member of CEN Working Groups for flyash in concrete. Co-author of several reports for utility and industrial power sector concerning with waste management. Organiser of more than 200 Conferences, Workshops and Training Courses on the broad protection of the environment. Edited 20 books, authored more than 50 papers. Expert in testing of ashes from power generation in REACH system.
Co-author of 3 patents and innovative concepts including Zero Waste Coal Power. Co-author of 6 publications on the Circular Economy, many papers and Workshops on this concept.

CIMA Activities

CIMA develops knowledge, technologies and practical models for the use of anthropogenic minerals, with particular emphasis on combustion by-products. The Center's activities combine applied research, expert consulting, cooperation with industry and support for administration and public institutions.
CIMA focuses on six areas:
- Characterization and assessment of the properties of anthropogenic minerals, including ashes, slags, flue gas desulfurization products and biomass ashes.
- Development of UPS processing and treatment technologies for material, construction, geotechnical and environmental applications.
- Supporting enterprises in moving from the "waste" model to the "resource" model, taking into account technical, environmental and regulatory requirements.
- Analysis of standards, regulations and legal barriers hindering the use of secondary raw materials in the economy.
- Building cooperation between science, industry, administration and industry organizations.
- Promoting the principle of "Priority for Secondary Products" as a practical tool for protecting natural resources and limiting the storage of anthropogenic minerals.
CIMA develops cooperation with producers and recipients of combustion by-products, scientific units, public administration, industry organizations and investors interested in the use of anthropogenic minerals.
Collaboration may include:
- assessment of the properties and potential use of the UPS;
- analysis of standard, environmental and regulatory requirements;
- qualification of materials for construction, geotechnical, environmental and industrial applications;
- preparation of concepts for research and development projects;
- training, expertise and industry studies;
- development of the principle of "Priority for Secondaries" in economic practice.
CIMA is open to cooperation with UPS manufacturers, industrial customers, scientific units, public administration, industry organizations and investors interested in the use of secondary raw materials.
Cooperation may include material analyses, assessment of application directions, support in the interpretation of regulatory requirements, preparation of research and development projects, training and development of strategies for the management of anthropogenic minerals.
